People have reported strange things inside the Farnsworth House for more than a century. Below are the stories tied to this building, a map for exploring other reportedly haunted spots around Gettysburg, and a short guide to the equipment people use when they investigate on their own.

House Ghost Stories

Cellar

Jeremy

A playful spirit guests and staff call Jeremy, believed to be a boy around 8 years old. He's known for rolling marbles across the floor, tugging at sleeves or apron strings, and soft giggling, especially when children are around. Most accounts describe him as gentle, more interested in playing than scaring anyone.

Sara Black Room

Mary, the Midwife

One of the most talked-about rooms in the house. Guests have described the feeling of being tucked into bed, a hand touching their hair, or someone sitting on the edge of the mattress. She's generally described as protective, particularly toward guests who aren't feeling well.

The Farnsworth House Inn

The Bullet Holes

Not a single figure, but a constant presence: over 100 bullet holes remain in the brick facade from the battle, and the house served as a field hospital for wounded and dying soldiers. Many guests describe a heavy, watched feeling throughout the building that they can't quite place.

The Garret

The Garret Sharpshooter

Confederate sharpshooters held the attic during the three days of fighting in July 1863. Some historians believe a shot fired from here is what killed Jennie Wade, the only civilian killed in the entire battle. Guests and staff report hearing footsteps pacing overhead when the attic is empty, and some describe the sound of a harp drifting down, as if a young soldier never left his post.

Cellar

The Woman on the Cellar Stairs

A shadowy figure in a long Victorian-era dress, reported near the bottom of the cellar stairs. The cellar is often described as carrying a heavier, more somber feeling than the rest of the house, and some recordings made down there have reportedly picked up quiet crying

Investigate Gettysburg Yourself

We built a map of public battlefields, cemeteries, and historic sites around town with a reputation for the unexplained. Every pin has coordinates, the story behind the location, and what to know before you go. It's built for people who want to look into these places themselves, not just read about them.

Visit Responsibly

Every site on this map is public and outside our property. Here's what to know before you go.

✓ None of these locations are owned or managed by the Farnsworth House Inn. Visiting one is at your own risk.
✓ Check posted hours before you go. Many sites close at dusk, and rules can change without notice.
✓ Stay on marked paths and respect any barriers, ropes, or closed areas.
✓ Never enter private property, even if it looks empty or abandoned.
✓ Leave everything as you find it. Metal detecting, digging, and removing artifacts are illegal on federal and state battlefield land.
✓ Many of these places are still resting places for soldiers and residents of Gettysburg. Treat every stop with the same respect you'd want for a family member's grave.
✓ If you go at night, bring a flashlight, let someone know where you're headed, and don't go alone.
✓ Follow all local laws and any instructions from park rangers, police, or property staff.
✓ The stories on this map are local legend and reported experiences, not proven fact. We're sharing them as folklore, not a guarantee of what you'll see or hear.
