Sallie the War Dog – 1/13/25

Perhaps the best-known regimental mascot of the Civil War, Sallie the war dog served with the 11th Pennsylvania throughout its service and was killed while leading a charge at Hatcher’s Run in 1865. When it came time to place a monument on the field of Gettysburg the men of the 11th Pennsylvania chose to memorialize Sallie, as an honored member of their regiment. But this is also the story of Gettysburg resident John D. Lippy who grew up hearing the story. His grandfather was a veteran of the Civil War, and a battlefield guide. During the 1913 reunion he met veterans of the 11th Pennsylvania who knew Sallie and became even more intrigued by their stories. Eventually he wrote a book entitled The War Dog. Join Historian and Guide, Timothy H. Smith, for this special Monday evening program, as he discusses the story of Sallie the war dog and the local man who was inspired by the legend.

As in past winters, the program will be held in Sweney’s Tavern, with the speaker starting at 6 p.m. Food and drinks are available, before and during the program starting at 5 p.m. Free parking is available in rear of the Farnworth House. Admission is $15 per person and are available online or in person.
